The third book in the series A Song of Ice and Fire is by far the best thus far (I’m on the fifth book).
I feel like it’s hard to talk about Game of Thrones without ruining something for someone so I’m going to keep this short.
I started reading this book knowing a lot of what was going to happen in it. I was recently on a business trip and I took the fourth book with me thinking it was the third. I only found out I was reading the book about 1/3 of the way through but by then it was too late, I already knew too much. One day I was thinking about it and realized how bothered I was that Martin had failed to document certain deaths and happenings. That being said, I looked into it and found out I was reading the wrong book. I felt pretty stupid not to mention annoyed because it would mean that the third book wouldn’t be as exciting.
A lot happens in this book. Expect:
1) Many people die but only two of the deaths really bothered me.
2) There’s more “magic” than there was in the first two books.
3) There’s a bunch of new characters (in case you weren’t already confused with the ones that exist, etc).
There’s so much more I want to say! Screw it. Spoiler alert!
I don’t really care about Catelyn’s death. She was getting a bit annoying and her dislike of John snow was ridiculous. I don’t like that Robb was killed but I understand it had to happen. I’m really pissed Grey Wind was killed and I wish he had escaped and met up with Nymeria or something like that. I’m happy John Snow hooked up with Ygritte even though it goes against his sworn words.
I also have another theory. I don’t think John Snow is Eddard Stark’s son. As it turns out, I’m not the only one who thinks this. Throughout all of the books, everyone keeps mentioning Eddard’s honour. It’s getting to the point that its hard to believe he would cheat on Catelyn. However, they mention that John looks like a Stark. That leads me to believe that he’s a Stark, jut not Eddards. Maybe he’s Benjen’s son and Eddard decided to keep him so that they wouldn’t kill his brother for breaking his fealty to the black. Maybe it’s Lyanna’s baby. With who? Robert maybe? Hmmm….. In this third book they mention John’s “mother” but they also say she was a milk maid (or whatever they’re called). Maybe she was just in charge of feeding John but wasn’t actually his mother. Or maybe it is Eddard’s son! Who knows. I suppose we will soon find out.
I was dissapointed with the lack of Gendry towards the end of the book. I’d like to know what happens with him, especially if he’s Robert and Cersei’s legitimate child. What will Daernerys think about that?
Book four review/thoughts to come….
